  Ashes Against The Grain by Agalloch (ALBUM REVIEW)

  Released in 2006 on The End. Agalloch is an American black metal from Portland. They formed in 1995. This is their 3rd album. Ashes Against The Grain is a superb example of well crafted, detailed songwriting. Agalloch has always been a band to focus in on mood and atmosphere, incorporating elements of folk and ambient music into their sound. This album does have those bases covered, but Agalloch added more of a rock element to this album. While acoustic guitars are still present, this album focus in on electric guitars and also has a very well polished production. At first, I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get into this. All the clean vocals, traditional metal guitar sounds, but as the album progressed, Agalloch really showcased some exceptional song craftsmanship. The songs were well layered and had all manner of interesting textures and mood. These guys really know how to let a song breathe and develop. Nothing on here sounded forced or rushed. Despite the more polished production, this album does retain the bands dark, moody vibe. Subject matter still revolves around death, nature, winter, the human soul. It's all handled very poetically and eloquently. Ashes Against The Grain took a few days to grow on me. It is definitely an album that takes a few spins to reveal it's true colors. Complex song structures, excellent use of atmosphere, not being over the top. Everything Agalloch does on here sounds very laboured over, but also very natural. The clean production ...
