Roelof Botha is a venture capitalist. He began his career as an actuary.
He was the CFO of PayPal. Now he works for Sequoia Capital and sat on the board of directors of YouTube before its acquisition by Google. Botha sits on the board of Meebo, and Xoom. Botha graduated first in his class from Stanford Business School in 2000, prior to which he was a consultant at McKinsey & Co., Johannesburg. He also attended the University of Cape Town where he did a BSc in Actuarial Science, Economics, and Statistics, where he graduated with the highest GPA in the history of the program. He became the youngest actuary in South African history soon after graduating.
Botha is the grandson of the former South African Foreign Affairs Minister of the same name who was also known as Roelof 'Pik' Botha. Pik Botha, a former South African politician who served as the country's foreign minister in the last years of the apartheid era. He was considered to be a liberal - at least in comparison to others in the then-ruling National Party.
