Dupuy's role in "Domherren i Milano" was a modest preliminary study for the role of Rose. In Schall's work the lover expresses himself in cantilenas with frequent coloratura passages, but keeping within the normal tenor compass. Schall must have conferred with Dupuy about the form. Kunzen was enthuiastic, and wrote that Dupuy "sang to general applause, and what is more, he deserved it. Undoubtedly he will start a new epoch here in singing, which has hithero been in the deepest decline." Thomas Overskou had not himself heard Dupuy, but he knew many people who were able to tell him about Dupuy's amazing singing skill. In his theatrical history he writes that Dupuy, "with his not exactly strong, but sonorous, appealing and by nature particularly supple voice... could with equal ease sing soft, soulful adagio pieces and the most brilliant cadenzas."
