One Parent Families|Gingerbread is a registered British charity that advocates on behalf of lone parent families. J. K. Rowling, once a single mother herself, was the charity's first Ambassador and now is President of the organization. Other ambassadors include celebrities such as author Martina Cole, and basketball star John Amaechi.
It was formerly known as the National Council for One Parent Families, and was originally founded in the aftermath of World War I as the National Council for the Unmarried Mother and her Child.
One Parent Families merged in June 2007 with a similar charity known as Gingerbread.
Their Mission Statement says:
One Parent Families|Gingerbread believes we can build a fairer society for all families, in which lone parents and their children are not disadvantaged and do not suffer from poverty, isolation, or social exclusion.
One Parent Families|Gingerbread is a charity which believes that, through working together, we can make change happen.
We recognise that families come in all shapes and sizes and we believe that the diversity of family life should be celebrated. We will work to develop diverse services responsive to real needs.
We will campaign for social justice and for a society within which individuals can grow and contribute.
We provide a platform for lone parents, to enable them to have a voice. We offer information and advice lone parents can trust, through the telephone, our publications, through our website and special events.
We act as a centre of expertise, and work with others to improve services, raise awareness and change attitudes. We will promote a culture that is caring, tolerant, and respectful.
