Sergio Fernández González, Sergio (born May 23, 1977 in Avilés, Asturias), is a Spanish footballer, currently for Real Zaragoza, in the central defender position.
A lanky, tall centre back, Sergio emerged through Sporting de Gijón's youth system, and made his first appearance for the main squad on January 7, 1996, in a 3-2 home win over UD Salamanca. He would play three further seasons as an undisputed first-choice, with Sporting being relegated at the end of 1997-98.
In the summer 1999, Sergio joined Real Club Celta de Vigo, being a somewhat important defensive figure in the Galician side's domestic and European consolidation. After relegation in 2003-04 (19 matches played), he contributed with 1 goal, on January 9, 2005, in a 2-1 home win against Xerez CD, as Celta returned to the first division, appearing prominently as it immediately achieved a UEFA Cup position.
In 2006-07, Sergio signed with Real Zaragoza, playing 28 matches en route to another sixth place in the league for another European qualification. However, in spite of a late equalizer against Real Madrid, on May 11, 2008, in a 2-2 home draw, the Aragon side would be relegated at the end of his second season.
