General (ret) Pervez Musharraf () (born 11 August 1943), NI(M), TBt, rcds, afwc, psc, gsc is a former President of Pakistan and a former Chief of Army Staff of the Pakistan Army,.
General Musharraf took power on 12 October 1999, following a military d'état coup, that overthrew the elected government of Pakistan. On October 14, 1999, General Musharraff declared a state of emergency and issued the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO), which suspended the federal Parliament, and the Provincial Assemblies, suspended the Constitution, and designated himself as Chief Executive. President Rafiq Tarar remained as the President of Pakistan.
On May 12, 2000, Pakistan's 12 member Supreme Court unanimously validated the October 1999 coup and granted Musharraf executive and legislative authority for 3 years from the coup date..
On 20 June 2001, Musharraf appointed himself as President of Pakistan, having President Rafiq Tarar resign. In a referendum held on April 30, 2002, Musharraf's presidency was extended by five more years, later to be endorsed by the National Assembly. Parliment appointed a Prime Minister, Zafarrullaha Khan Jamali.
September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, forced Pakistan to drop its support of the Taliban regime in neighboring Afghanistan and pledges close cooperation with the United States in its war against terrorism.
Subsequently, the 111th brigade of the Pakistan army entered the supreme court building and removed Chaudhry and several other judges from the supreme court and arrested them.
Mr. Abdul Hameed Dogar along with 3 other judges immediately took the oath on PCO. Mr Dogar was appointed as the Chief Justice of this newly constituted Supreme Court
