Laurette A.J. Onkelinx (born October 2 1958) is a Belgian politician from the Francophone Socialist Party. She is the current Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health in the Belgian federal government, i.e. the Leterme I Government, which took office on March 20, 2008.
She graduated in law at the University of Liège after which she worked for 10 years as a lawyer. At the age of 30 she was elected to the Belgian Chamber of Representatives.
Her father, Gaston Onkelinx, originally a Dutch-speaking migrant from Flemish Limburg to francophone Wallonia, has long been mayor of Seraing (near Liège) and member of the House of Representatives (1974-1987). Her older brother, Alain Onkelinx, is since September 2005 member of the Regional Parliament of Wallonia.
In October 2007 she stunned the public opinion by comparing the Flemish (60% of the Belgian population) with 'mérules (serpula lacrymans)' (a type of fungus) that threaten the country. ==Political career==
