She is noted especially for her work in some important European films of the seventies, such as Vittorio de Sica's Il Giardino dei Finzi-Contini, Bernardo Bertolucci's The Conformist and Novecento, and Liliana Cavani's Beyond Good and Evil. Sanda also starred in the films Steppenwolf with Max von Sydow and The Mackintosh Man with Paul Newman.
