"Immediately when they see (you), they become wary," said Gordon Fales, a 70-year-old Jasper County retiree who verified addresses for the U.S. Census Bureau this spring.

"We don't collect information about religion, because most of the issues we ask about in our surveys refer to government policy on some level," explained Tom Edwards, spokesperson for the U.S. Census Bureau, by phone to AlterNet. "I'm not sure it quite fits into the scheme, if you will. There's not really a policy objective to asking people about their religion."

"Of the 120 million questionnaires we're sending out next March, 13 million forms will be in English and Spanish," said Raul Cisneros, chief publicity officer for the Bureau. "We want everybody to participate."
