The Ministry of Labour is responsible for labour issues in the Canadian province of Ontario.
The current Minister of Labour is the Honourable Peter Fonseca.
The Ministry of Labour and its agencies play a key role in Ontario by promoting safe and healthy workplaces, fairness in employment and stable labour relations. The ministry’s three program responsibilities are delivered from a head office in Toronto and 19 offices organized around four regions, centred in Ottawa, Hamilton, Sudbury and Toronto. As well, the ministry oversees the work of eight specialized agencies.
The Ministry of Labour's core businesses are:
*Occupational Health and Safety
*Employment Rights and Responsibilities including the Employment Standards 2000 Act
*Labour Relations
The Ministry of Labour's (MOL's) core Occupational Health and Safety Programs are divided into three specific subject areas. 1: Construction Health and Safety, under the direction of Michael Chappell, CRSP, BSc, CET; 2: Industrial Health and Safety, under the direction of Wayne De L'Orme;, and Mining Health and Safety under the direction of John Robertson)
The Employment standards program is designed to protect the vulnerable rights of workers, and address worker complaints for unpaid wages and other violations of the legislation. This program is carried out under the direction of Tracey Mills.
For public convenience, the MOL is split into 4 Regional territories, 1: Western region - Director Sophie Dennis, 2: Eastern Region - Director Sandra Lawson, 3: Northern Region - Director Candys Ballanger-Michaud, and Central Region - Director Filomena Savioa
The Ministry of Labour enforces the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), and the Employment standards Act (ESA2000), which protects the safety of workers, and their employment rights!
