In Kerala, a formation of left parties led by the CPI(M) called the Left Democratic Front is the governing group in the Kerala State Assembly.
Factionalism within the CPI-M and its attitude towards junior front partners like RSP and Janata Dal(S) were the main reasons behind the debacle in Kerala.
In West Bengal, Left has lost because of the Congress wave and some local issues. The Left Front wanted to develop the state industrially which was blocked by the opposition.
