More on Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions
Description from Wikipedia:
The Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions is a women's tennis tournament set to be introduced in the 2009 WTA Tour. Superseding the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic in Bali (a former Tier III tournament) the event will follow a similar format to the year-end WTA Tour Championships. The inaugral event will take place from November 4–8.
The Tournament of Champions' innovation lies in the fact that it will exclude players who qualify for the WTA Tour Championships (usually the top eight players), thus creating a second tier year-end event. The remaining 10 highest ranked players, who must also have won an International tournament, will qualify, along with two wildcards. Tour chief Larry Scott called it an opportunity for "next generation stars". The tournament was borne out of a general restructuring of the WTA Tour that took place in 2009, and is intended to be the culmination of the International events.
The initial prize money on offer will be $600,000; in addition to this, any player who wins three International tournaments and this event will win a bonus $1 m. Like the Tour Championships, it will be played in a round robin format, with the tournament containing three groups of four players.
